Core value of the month: Responsibility

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Monta Loma Families,

It has truly been wonderful to connect with you this week. By now you have heard from your child’s teacher at least once, if not more and from our office staff. Our spirits have been lifted by your appreciation and enthusiasm for the challenges of sheltering at home.

You should also be receiving regular communication from the MVWSD office. You can always check the Coronavirus Update page for the latest district updates.

As Dr. Rudolph said in his message to you yesterday, we know you are all balancing work, family, and very different daily lives. My personal experience with trying to help my own children with school work was often very frustrating. There is a reason I paid someone else to teach them to drive.

You may be experiencing some of that frustration yourselves right now. One tip for smoothing out the rough spots is to use way more positive reinforcement than often feels natural. At Monta Loma, we use the 3R model of teacher language to manage classrooms and phrase our positive reinforcement.  The 3 Rs are Reinforcing, Reminding, and Redirecting. Here’s a short summary of them from Responsive Classroom. For more details, I encourage you to read their article.

Reinforcing highlights students’ positive efforts and attitudes and quality work so that they know what they should keep doing as they learn. Remember to be specific and focus on the effort.

Reminding language is best used before starting a hard task. It helps students remember the steps they need to take or what is expected. Be sure to use neutral, non-critical tone and body language.

Finally, redirecting language is for when you need to stop a behavior or redirect to a different strategy. Just as with reminding language, it’s important to use neutral tone and body language. Be sure to say what to do, not just what to stop doing.

In closing, keep your comments, questions, and connections coming. We enjoy hearing from you.

Stay safe,

Gloria

NEWS FROM THE DISTRICT OFFICE

Chromebooks and schoolwork packets: Offered again this week

MVWSD will again offer Chromebooks to families who need them. We think that it’s important that each of our families has one Internet-ready device (laptop, iPad, etc) in their house for schoolwork. Our middle school students already have one Chromebook per student. For any of our elementary school students who don’t already have one device in their house, please call 650-526-3252.

There are a limited number of grade-level school work packets available outside the District Office (the side closest to Stevenson Elementary), 1400 Montecito Ave., beginning March 24 through March 27.

Emotional, logistics support resources for families

Our School Community Engagement Facilitators have teamed up to provide a list of resources for families. Sheltering in place and not being in our regular routines of work and school can be hard on our emotional and mental health, in addition to making access to meals, rent payments and other typical activities more difficult.

Click here for a Letter from CHAC about services and tele-health appointments during school closure.

From the City: Sign up to get regular COVID-19 updates

The City of Mountain View’s strategic communications team is offering regular updates about COVID-19 response and resources. Residents may text 'MVCOVID' to 22828 to have the digest sent right to their emails every day. Here is the link to the latest issue. The City’s COVID-19 response and resources webpage is www.mountainview.gov/covid

Make sure you’re counted! The U.S. Census is coming up

It’s crucial that we all participate, because an accurate count of residents is important for funding our community’s public resources, planning for the future, and for our voice in government. We all want to make sure that Mountain View gets the funding, services, and business support we need.

Here's how the Census works (video)
