Core value of the month: Respect

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Monta Loma Families,

At last week’s coffee families asked some great questions about assessment. As partners in your child’s education, it is important to us that you know how your student is doing. We share this information with you through parent teacher conferences, report cards, and assessment reports.

It’s also important that you know about the types of assessment we use. Throughout the year, students participate in three kinds of assessment. Classroom assessments like checks for understanding, assignments, and quizzes help teachers monitor and adjust along the way.

Diagnostic benchmarks are taken three times a year and give a bigger picture overview of student progress throughout the year. The first assessment window for these tests is now through September 19th.

State assessments are used to monitor proficiency in grade level standards and help us evaluate our effectiveness. Students in 3rd through 5th grade take English Language Arts and Math assessments in the spring. 5th graders also take a Science assessment in the spring. Students whose primary language is a language other than English take a language proficiency assessment when they first enter our school and then annually until they gain fluency.

The ultimate goal of assessment is always student growth and learning. Our staff is committed to preparing students for assessment with standards based instruction and with the social/emotional skills to persevere and maintain a growth mindset. You can help too by making sure your student gets a good night’s sleep, eats a healthy breakfast, and comes to school on time every day.

In partnership,

Gloria Higgins
