Core value of the month: courage

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Monta Loma Families,

As 2019 comes to an end, I want to express my heartfelt thanks to all of you. It is a privilege to share in the many gifts you and your students bring to our community. Your support for community events, donations to charitable efforts, and passion for enriching the educational experience for our students make Monta Loma a truly exceptional school. The 1,394 items collected for our food drive is just one example of your compassion. This is even more than we donated last year! Most of all, I am grateful for the curious, thoughtful, and creative students you send us every day. We learn from them as they learn from us.

Wishing you a peaceful and happy holiday break. We’ll see you again on January 7th.

In partnership,

Gloria

Congratulations to our Monta Loma students who have completed the second annual Hour of Code! The Hour of Code is a global event that introduces students to an hour of coding classes. 15 high school students from Computer Science of the Next Generation (CENG) hosted the Hour of Code with the help of 22 junior mentors. Junior mentors are third to fifth-grade students who have taken our Scratch and JavaScript coding classes. They were excited to teach their peers how to code. Check out our pictures here.

To encourage your children to continue their coding journey, please go to code.org or scratch.mit.edu to learn from their tutorials. We are also offering a new FREE after school Beginning Scratch class for third to fifth graders on Wednesdays, January 8 - February 26 from 3:15 - 4:45 pm. (No class on 2/19) The class is limited to 20 students. Please register in the link here: https://forms.gle/PHf7ecwwEcsFNEqv6  Registration closes on December 20 or when all spots are filled.

Middle School Electives Interest Survey coming the week of 12/16

As we enter the third year of the inclusive middle school schedule, our middle schools are currently working to provide quality elective offerings that are a great complement to our core academics. It's our goal to align electives with students’ interests and teachers’ credentials.

In order to gauge students’ interests, and inform the development of the elective catalog for the next school year, students in grades 5-7 will be asked to complete a survey in class the week of December 16th. This survey will list possible electives for 2020-21 and ask students to indicate the top three electives they may be interested in taking.  The purpose of this survey is to understand student interests. Students will not be committed to taking the electives they express interest in. Incoming and current middle school students will not formally request electives until the spring of 2020.

For more information on the process, and to view last year’s electives catalogs, please click on www.mvwsd.org/MSelectives.
