Core value of the month: compassion

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Monta Loma Families,

On Veteran’s Day we honor the men and women who have served our country in war and in peace. We also thank future veterans who are serving our country now.  It’s in that spirit of honor and appreciation I share with you the faces and stories of some important veterans in my life.

pic1My father served in the United States Air Force for 26 years, rising through the ranks from private to Chief Master Sergeant. He joined the Air Force before graduating from high school, but he proudly earned his diploma as he served. He and my mother even more proudly put all of their children through college. I was just an infant when he served in Thailand during the Vietnam War. When he came home two years later, I didn’t recognize him because he had grown a moustache and the photo I knew him from featured a clean shave.

pic2My brother followed my father’s footsteps to military service.  His chosen branch was the United States Army, which he joined as an officer having participated in ROTC through college. His service brought him overseas for both Gulf Wars. The eldest of my siblings, he sets the bar high for the rest of us, and models perseverance and pride.

pic3 My cousin served as an enlisted member of the Army for a couple of tours in Germany. I was in high school when she returned home and regaled us with stories of adventure and humorous misadventure. I thought she was the coolest thing in town and I owe my driving skills to her.

You most likely have stories about your own family and friends who served in uniform. Some of you ma

de a commitment to do so yourselves. To all our veterans and future veterans, thank you most sincerely for your service.

In partnership,

Gloria
