Core value of the month: Hard Work
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Monta Loma Families,
As we enter that last weeks of the 2018-19 school year, our thoughts turn to next school year. I want to let you know about changes that will occur in our staffing and programming.
We will bid fond farewells to some of our staff at the end of this year as they move on to new life adventures in differents schools, different cities, or different phases in their lives. Mrs. Mixon, Mr. Dechter, Mr. Stribling, and Mrs. Tellez will bring their talents to other schools in our district. We are grateful they will not be too far from us. Mrs. Fetroe, Mrs. Satterfield and Mrs. Azofeifa are moving a little farther away. Our loss is another city’s gain, but email and social media will keep is in close contact. And we can’t wait to see postcards from Mrs. Burris’ travel adventures as she enjoys her well deserved retirement. We thank each of these Monta Loma family members for the joy they brought to our school.
We are fortunate to have some greetings as well. Welcome back to David Harris, who will rejoin the Monta Loma team as our instructional coach. Mr. Harris comes back to us with a wealth of experience in teaching, coaching and educational technology. Welcome to Corina Ruiz who will be joining us our SCEF next year. As a former Monta Loma parent, she knows our school well. As the current SCEF at Crittenden, she has a valuable perspective on where our students are heading. We are looking forward to learning from them.
Monta Loma will also have some familiar faces in new places next year. We’re excited to have Mrs. Gunshor teaching a K/1 combo class, Mrs. Fletcher-Perry teaching 4th grade, and Ms. Fassiotto teaching STEM. We know they will do great things in these new roles.
Based on our enrollment we are currently planning on the following classroom configurations for next year. Enrollment continues through the summer, so it is possible that this can change.
Changes to our WIN program will allow us to provide two periods of STEM instruction a week for each student. Supports and extensions through WIN time will be provided for Math and/or Literacy during dedicated RtI times for each grade level. Special education services will continue through our Resource and Speech teachers as well as other service providers.
I will continue to monitor enrollment and staffing throughout the summer. Stay tuned for details.

If your student joined us for before school classes, the last day for Lexia Lab and Learning Leopards will be this Friday, May 10th.
Monta Loma Talent Show
The Student Council is hosting the annual Monta Loma Talent Show in our new Multi on Tuesday, June 4! If your child has a talent that (s)he would like to share please fill out the application form (available here attached and in the Office). They may perform as an individual or as a group. Each performance will be limited to approximately 3 minutes. This is not a competition, but a chance to share your skills. All applications are due to your child's teacher by Friday, May 24. We look forward to seeing your talents on display!

16th Annual MVWSD Interscholastic Chess Tournament Registration
16AMICT will be on Sunday, May 19, 2019 at Monta Loma Elementary School.
The registration for the Chess Tournament is now open and is available at

The registration deadline is May 15, 2019.
Notes for all players and parents:
• Lunch: Only light snacks will be served. All participants and spectators should have lunch before coming.
• Child Care: There is no supervised child care on site.
• Open Section: Players arriving late, leaving early, or who cannot checkmate on their own must play in the open section. No results will be kept, and players may ask for assistance with their moves. Special variants may be played as well.
Notes for competitive players only:
• Check-in: Please check in between 11:30 and 12:00. Late players may play competitively only at the discretion of the tournament director.
• Duration: Players must play all 5 rounds (approximately 4:30). Do not play competitively if you must leave early.
• Time controls: All games are technically G/15 (15 minutes for each player). Clocks will be used for each player's last 5 minutes after 20 minutes have elapsed.
• Skill: Players must know all the rules of chess and be able to checkmate opponents without assistance.
• Level: Talented juniors may play in the senior section.
Adult volunteers needed for Robotics club
Our final Robotics group of the year is underway and we are in need of adult volunteers. No experience needed! Assist Coach Jerry engaging with students as they build and program their robots. Meets Mondays from 3-5pm. Contact [email protected] for more info.
NEWS FROM THE DISTRICT OFFICE
Electives selection for grades 5-7 opens at 4 pm on May 1
It is the time of year when our incoming middle school students (grades 5-7) choose their electives courses for next year. All 5th-7th graders should select their course electives online by May 10, 2019 through the PowerSchool portal.
Parents, please look for an email in your inbox from April 26 with links to course catalogs and directions. Please talk with your student and then log in to your PowerSchool portal account (either student’s or parent’s) to help your student select his/her electives. If you have difficulty with PowerSchool, please contact your school secretary. If you need help, please call or visit your school office or attend the registration support time on Thursday, May 2 from 3-4 pm, and 6-7:30 pm; and Coffee with the Counselor on Friday, May 3, 8-9 am. SELPA 1 CAC will be holding their last meeting of the school year on May 23 at 9:30 in the MVLA Board Room at 1299 Bryant St, Mountain View. On-campus before- and after school care programs registering students now
We know that finding reliable, high-quality, affordable childcare is a challenge for many of our families and staff members. Increasing these offerings at our schools to meet demand has been a priority for MVWSD. On campus, our schools host several long-standing programs -- Beyond the Bell and the YMCA Silicon Valley Before and Aftercare -- in addition to a new one planned to open this fall, Right at School.
Right at School (flyer here) is a fee-based, nationally-recognized before- an after school program held every day that school is in session, from 6:30 AM until 6 PM, plus drop-in and school break care. It is planned for all MVWSD schools, including middle schools and the new Jose Antonio Vargas Elementary. Right at School presents experiential two-week science enrichment curriculum units, such as “Icky Experiments,” “Page to Stage,” and “Young Detectives.” The program incorporates physical movement, outdoor time and homework completion. It offers 10% sibling discount, 25% discount for free and reduced lunch families and flexible 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 day pricing options.
Free Summer Meals
MVWSD is partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank to provide FREE summer meals to children, 18 years old and younger, as well as senior citizens. The summer meals program reaches children who need good nutrition when school is out of session. Last year, MVWSD served almost 60,000 summer meals.

Presenters: My digital TAT2. Gloria Moskowitz-Sweet, PPSC, LCSW was a university lecturer for 20 years and has over 30 years of experience as a school social worker, specializing in the social emotional well being of children and teens.
Topics include the evolving digital landscape and current trends, emotional and psychological responses to technology and social media, responding to challenging issues, such as techno-perfection, digital distraction, and sleep strategies to engage your child with constructive conversation and promote media balance for the entire family.
