What is SIOP?
This week, I’m describing another feature of our Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP):.

Higher Order Questions and Tasks
All students need questions and tasks that promote critical thinking and require them to think deeply. As a staff, we are committed to avoiding the temptation to rely assignments that only require one word answers or simple recall of facts. Instead we are intentionally building in work for students to compare and contrast concepts or evaluate the effectiveness of a strategy they tried. This is challenging but completely achievable for all students when we offer multiple ways for students express their thinking. Students might answer a higher order question with language, pictures, actions.

SIOP is a collection of instructional strategies and tools that supports educators in addressing the academic and linguistic needs of English learners while enhancing the overall learning environment for all students.

Last year, we focused our efforts on Language Objectives, Vocabulary, Supplementary Materials, and Linking Past and New Learning. This year we are continuing those features and adding four more to our repertoire: Frequent Interactions, Scaffolding, Meaningful Activities, and Higher Order Questions and Tasks. In the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing a little information about one of the SIOP features. SIOP will also be the topic of the next Principal’s Coffee on October 12th. I hope you can make it.

Monta Loma has worked diligently with the MVPD and the neighborhood to improve traffic flow and pedestrian safety
during drop off and dismissal sessions. We ask for your patience and cooperation during drop off and dismissal.

• Drop-off is from 7:45 am – 8:30 am
• There is NO PARKING in any of the drive through loops-Parking is only available in striped spaces.
• The Bus Loop near the Kinder classrooms is for buses only.

Project Cornerstone – for parents and caregivers!

The Mountain View-Whisman School District is offering a free series of parent meetings open to all parents and caregivers. Join Project Cornerstone’s engaging workshop - Take It Personally, starting on Tuesday, October 16th from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Monta Loma Elementary School. You do not need to be a parent from Monta Loma, just an adult who cares about all kids.
We know that your strong family is the best predictor of your children's success. Parents and caregivers need fresh ideas that work to keep families close, as children grow. Come learn new tools for strengthening your relationships with children and youth in this 6-week workshop facilitated by Project Cornerstone. Each week we will share, discuss, and practice ways to show caring, give support, set boundaries, and build strong relationships that help youth succeed in school, friendships, and life!
Learn tools you can use now – to strengthen your family connections and help young people thrive.

October is National Bullying Prevention Month

On October 24th we will be celebrating Unity Day by asking everyone to wear orange.


Monta Loma will have its annual costume parade on Wednesday, October 31st at 8:35am on the blacktop. Classroom activities for Halloween vary by teacher and grade level. See your child’s teacher for details. Alternative activities are available for anyone not wishing to participate in the costume parade or classroom activities.

Please note these rules for costumes.
Students must be able to put on and take off their own costumes.
Keep it friendly-No weapons, violence, gore, or vulgar messaging.
Masks are allowed only if they don’t obstruct vision.


MV Parent U presents “Cyber bullying: What parents need to know about cyberbullying and its effect on students' mental health.”
When: Wednesday, October 10th from 6:30-8pm at the Graham Middle School Auditorium.
Presenters: Uplift - Deanna Flores, Prevention and Early Intervention Program and Santa Rodriguez, Family Partner
* Learn how to help our kids stay safe online.
* Discussion of online dangers and how to create a safe space for children to talk to their parents.

Mentor Tutor Connection Volunteer Information Session

October 23rd - You can change the life of a student!
Come learn about volunteer opportunities to Mentor high school students and Tutor students in grades K-8 in our Mountain View and Los Altos schools.
There is no obligation to sign up as a volunteer. You're welcome to just come and learn more about what we do.
All volunteers must be high school graduates.

Family Talk: Puberty program

Health Connected, in partnership with the Palo Alto Medical Foundation, is holding "Family Talk: Puberty program designed to promote healthy communication within families that lasts a lifetime!" Through drawings, multimedia, and activities, Health Connected parent-child communication expert, Vanessa Kellam, will guide families as they explore the physical changes that many youth experience during puberty. In a relaxed setting, families will learn, laugh and share, making a potentially sensitive subject more comfortable.

This 90 minute program is recommended for children between 10-12 years old and their families; however, adults may bring children younger or older, depending on their maturity level. Families of all structures - moms, dads, grandparents and trusted adults - are welcome! Tickets are $25 per family (plus handling fees).

TB Clearance Requirement – California State regulations mandate that parent volunteers who serve students in our schools be cleared for tuberculosis. Volunteers may choose to either have a TB risk assessment or a TB skin test done at the volunteer's expense for the required clearance, which is valid for four (4) years. If tuberculosis risk factors are identified during a tuberculosis risk assessment done by a health care provider, the volunteer will be required to submit a certificate from a health care provider that he/she has been examined and is free of infectious tuberculosis (Ed Code 49406). Please bring this Tuberculosis Risk Assessment Form to your health care provider found here:

Let's Talk Support Group/IEP Troubleshooting, Evening Sessions!
Let's Talk is our support group for IEPs and 504s and any special education concerns or venting! Parent run and parent led, all are welcome, but all information discussed must remain confidential.

Fall Festival is coming, Friday, October 19th from 3 - 6pm!
This is the PTA's Fall Carnival and first major fundraiser for our school. We will need LOTS of volunteers to help make this event a success. Please sign up with your child's teacher or on their classroom sign up sheet.

Ways to volunteer:
1. Be your classroom's game leader and create a carnival game for your class. This can be as simple as a corn hole game or as complex as a trivia game. The classroom that collects the most raffle tickets will win a class party! For the 4th/5th grade parents, you should work with your child's straight class teacher.
2. Volunteer to help work your class game/booth. This is a fun way to help the kids enjoy the festival! Time slots are 30 minutes to an hour. Many hands make light work.
3. Donate prizes to your classroom's game. Leftover party favors are great prizes for the kids.
4. Be a general volunteer and help with set-up, clean-up or selling food during the event.
5. Bake items for the bake sale! Anyone interested in donating food or volunteering at the PTA bake sale should email Michelle Bessler at
Please ask your teachers how you can help or email the PTA ( if you are able to help. You do NOT need to be a PTA member to volunteer.
This is a family friendly event and one of our most popular. Please join us!

It's still not too late to join the PTA! Membership is $15 for each adult. Forms are in the office and you can pay by cash/check or PayPal (send it to and don't forget to include a note stating your name, your child's name, and their homeroom). Your membership puts books in our library, sends our kids on field trips, donates classroom supplies, funds after school activities and a myriad of other things.
