Core value of the month: Hard work

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Monta Loma Families,

Thank you so much for your partnership through this busy season in the school year. There are so many important ways to stay engaged and informed. I’m repeating last week’s blurbs about registration, Ability Awareness Week, and resources for families who may need financial support. I’m also adding items from this week’s Board Meeting that may be of interest.

MVWSD Board of Trustee Meeting

At this week’s Board of Trustees meeting, Dr. Rudolph will present information about next year’s budget and the Prop 39 request for Bullis Charter School. See the agenda for more information.

Registration for Next School Year

It is very important you complete your child’s registration for next school year 2019-20. The window for registration closes on February 3, 2019. Office staff will be calling families to offer support. You can log on to your PowerSchool Parent Portal (link here) to complete the registration. If you need help, please call Brenda or Lisset at the school office.

Ability Awareness Week

Our PTA Council is sponsoring Ability Awareness at Monta Loma on February 7. In this exciting, fun-filled assembly 1st, 4th, and 5th graders will have the chance to experience what it’s like to have differences in abilities. Volunteers are needed to lead activities. Please let the office or your child’s teacher  know if you can help. We’ll train you with everything you’ll need.

Support for Families

Monta Loma is lucky to have partners like the Community Services Agency in Mountain View. They provide free groceries for anyone who would like them. Bring your own grocery bags or ask Ms. Tellez for one. They will be at Monta Loma from 4:00 to 6:00 on January 28th, February 11th, and February 25th.

For any families affected by the federal government shutdown, MVWSD's Food and Nutrition Services Department encourages you to apply for school meal benefits for your children. It is easy and confidential! You may now qualify during this difficult financial time.

As always we are here to help.

Gloria

The MVLA Parent Education Speaker Series presents "The Myths of Happiness:  The Science and Practice of Increasing Well-being" with Sonja Lyubomirsky.

Tuesday, January 29, 2019 - 7:00 - 9:00 pm | MVHS Spartan Theater |3535 Truman Ave., Mountain View,  CA

Happiness not only feels good; it is good. Happy people have more stable marriages, superior health, and higher incomes. Fortunately, experiments have shown that people can intentionally increase their happiness. Sonja Lyubomirsky gives parents insight to:

  • discuss and debunk common misconceptions about what life changes will make us truly miserable or truly happy

  • brand new research on the “how” of happiness—that is, when and why such practices as gratitude or kindness work “best”

  • how small and simple activities can transform people into happier and more flourishing individuals

Sonja Lyubomirsky (AB Harvard, summa cum laude; PhD Stanford) is Professor and Vice Chair of Psychology at the University of California, Riverside, and author of The How of Happiness and The Myths of Happiness, published in 34 countries. Lyubomirsky’s research focuses on the benefits of happiness, why some people are happier than others, and how happiness can be durably increased.
