Frequently Asked Questions About CEL

I work during the day and don't have time to assist in the classroom. How can I contribute?

There are many ways to contribute that do not require your presence at school or in the classroom. See our opportunities page. Remember though, you may be able to make one or two classroom contributions if you are able to take some time off occasionally, such as assisting with a field trip.

Also, please remember that others in your family, or even friends can contribute on your behalf. We have often found that grandparents experience great joy in reading with children, for example.

I don't speak English (very well). How can I contribute?

Several opportunities, listed on our opportunity pages, do not require English language skills. In particular administrative tasks and assistance at events are good candidates.

I am fearful of speaking in front of a group of people, but I'd like to contribute. How can I?

Most of the opportunities do not require you to speak in front of people at all. Some do, but only to a group of children. May be you are less fearful in that scenario? Consider giving that a try: children are very accepting and forgiving. Are you bi-lingual? Translation services for documents and web site are always needed.

Who is going to enforce the Commitment to Success Contract?

We have given many different ways of participating because we want our parents to succeed and for participating to be manageable for them. If someone is unable to fulfill their commitment, the volunteer coordinator will contact them and suggest opportunities for them. If the family is still not participating, our principal, Cathy Baur will contact them.

Will my child be banned from school if I don't contribute?

No. At Monta Loma we strongly believe that the community aspect of our CEL program is essential to improving the student's overall experience and will result in a better academic performance so that they may be better prepared for the future. We will do everything we can to work with you to find ways in which you can contribute and be part of our community. It is important for your child and that should be your biggest motivation to find some way of contributing.

If I have more than two children at Monta Loma do I have to volunteer more?

In the Commitment to Success Contract, families commit to participating 30 hours per year, or roughly 3 hours per month. Families with more than two children at Monta Loma are strongly encouraged to participate more than 3 hours per month as they are able.

Do I have to pay anything to be a part of Monta Loma Schoolwide CEL?

There is no mandatory contribution to participate, but there are enrichment activities and fieldtrips that need to be funded. Families are encouraged to donate to the school in ways that are manageable for them. If a classroom or a grade level needs money for an activity, a letter will go home with a donation request.
