Core value of the month: courage

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Monta Loma Families

It was a treat to have coffee at Moffett Field last week. Thanks to the PTA for hosting with tasty treats, and thank you Katie Kirsch for organizing. Communication typically rises to the top of the list when we get together. Here’s a list of the various ways and purposes of school communication tools. I hope this serves as a good starting point when you have questions or are interested in finding out more about our school or district.

Spotlights is published weekly and emailed to families through schoolmessenger. All official school messages are announced in Spotlights. Families who prefer paper copies may request them through the office. This message goes to the email accounts attached to your students profile in our student data system.

School Messenger is used to send email or text updates and reminders about specific events or topics. Report cards and i-Ready test results are sent electronically through School Messenger. It also goes to the email accounts attached to your student profile. For directions on how to opt in for text messages visit the MVWSD communication page.

The Monta Loma Website is montaloma.mvwsd.org. There you can find information about upcoming events, school programs, policies and procedures, parent groups and much more. While you’re there you can set up calendar reminders from the Monta Loma Public Calendar.

The MVWSD Website is mvwsd.org. It has a great deal of information about events, policies, registration, transportation, child nutrition, budgets, bonds, and much more.

Social Media You can find us on Facebook @MontaLomaElem and Twitter account @MontaLomaSchool. We use social media primarily to share photos of events or classroom happenings.

Our School Sign is updated weekly to communicate brief reminders about upcoming dates.

Grade Level or Classroom Newsletters are used to share classroom specific news. See your child’s teacher for details.

Office Personnel are always happy to answer questions. Just stop by or call (650) 903-6915. If they don’t have the information they will find someone who does.

The Monta Loma PTA Website is montalomapta.org. There you will find a wealth of information about events, PTA membership, spirit wear and FAQs for new families.

Up To Us is the platform PTA uses for you to sign up for volunteering at events or communicate timely information. You can email [email protected] to get information about how to sign up for Up To Us.

In partnership,

Gloria

Teachers develop a new curriculum with each new session. We will study artists that examine and reflect on the many things that make up our world and contribute to the future. CENG Hour of Code Update and FREE After School Beginning Scratch Class Wednesdays, Jan 8 - Feb 26 from 3:15 - 4:45 pm

Congratulations to our Monta Loma students who have completed the second annual Hour of Code! The Hour of Code is a global event that introduces students to an hour of coding classes. 15 high school students from Computer Science of the Next Generation (CENG) hosted the Hour of Code with the help of 22 junior mentors. Junior mentors are third to fifth-grade students who have taken our Scratch and JavaScript coding classes. They were excited to teach their peers how to code. Check out our pictures here.

To encourage your children to continue their coding journey, please go to code.org or scratch.mit.edu to learn from their tutorials. We are also offering a new FREE after school Beginning Scratch class for third to fifth graders on Wednesdays, January 8 - February 26 from 3:15 - 4:45 pm. (No class on 2/19) The class is limited to 20 students. Please register in the link here: https://forms.gle/PHf7ecwwEcsFNEqv6  Registration closes on December 20 or when all spots are filled.

Computer Engineers of the Next Generation is a nonprofit 501 (c)(3) organization whose mission is to inspire underrepresented students to explore and develop an interest in Computer Science. For more information, please check out our website at cengclass.org.  Please email Alice Lee at [email protected] for any questions.

Are Vacations / Travel Excused Absences?:  Unfortunately, family vacations or travel is not excused – even when you inform your teacher or the office.  This may come as a surprise for parents. We appreciate you letting us know so that you will not receive a call from the auto-dialer asking you to verify the absence. For more information, click here.

Middle School Electives Interest Survey coming the week of 12/16

As we enter the third year of the inclusive middle school schedule, our middle schools are currently working to provide quality elective offerings that are a great complement to our core academics. It's our goal to align electives with students’ interests and teachers’ credentials.

In order to gauge students’ interests, and inform the development of the elective catalog for the next school year, students in grades 5-7 will be asked to complete a survey in class the week of December 16th. This survey will list possible electives for 2020-21 and ask students to indicate the top three electives they may be interested in taking.  The purpose of this survey is to understand student interests. Students will not be committed to taking the electives they express interest in. Incoming and current middle school students will not formally request electives until the spring of 2020.

For more information on the process, and to view last year’s electives catalogs, please click on www.mvwsd.org/MSelectives.
