Core value of the month: courage

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Monta Loma Families,

Happy New Year!

I want to take this opportunity to wish all our Monta Loma Families a happy and

healthy new year. I hope you enjoyed a relaxing break filled with memories to cherish.

I feel lucky to have two new years every year, one in August and one in January. I take the chance to think about resolutions. As educators and parents or guardians, we are all interested in helping students develop a strong sense of efficacy. The research is clear that students with a growth mindset do better in school and in life.  Perhaps it was best expressed by Henry Ford when he said “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.”

Please allow me to suggest two resolutions for all of us this year.

  1. Resolve to praise the process, not the ability or talent. When we say “You are good at math.” students think they got a correct answer because they are naturally talented. Then when they get an answer wrong, they may think their talent is limited. Instead say, “ You worked hard on solving that problem. You found a strategy that worked for you.” This helps them learn that effort matters.

  2. Resolve to talk about setbacks as opportunities to learn. Students who think of setbacks as limit of their ability tend to give up or stick to what they know. Students who can reframe setbacks as opportunities tend to persevere and try new challenges.

We all have the power to promote a growth mindset in our children. Let’s work together on these simple actions.

In partnership,

Gloria
