PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Monta Loma Families,
October Safety Month
During the month of October, we focused on safety in many types of situations.
Our annual emergency preparedness drill helped us prepare for evacuation, accounting for students and staff, parent-student reunification, search and rescue, first aid, and operations without power. Our monthly fire drill is another opportunity during which we practice evacuating and accounting for everyone. Additionally, our Kinder through Second Grade students attended a fire safety assembly with our local firefighters where they learned how to stay safe from fire and what to do if there is a fire in there home. All classes also viewed our dangerous intruder video that encourages students to stay calm and listen to the adults in charge.
The most important way to be safe at home in the event of an emergency is to have a plan and communicate it with your children. Here are some resources that can help.

Power Outage Plan
While MVWSD does not anticipate being affected by power shutoffs, please be assured we have specific plans and procedures in place to prepare for an outage, should it occur. In the event of a power outage affecting the school district prior to the school day starting, it is likely that school will be cancelled. If an outage after school starts, the school day will continue as planned. In this scenario, parents should plan to pick up their students immediately at dismissal time as afterschool activities would be cancelled (no Beyond the Bell, Right at School, YMCA, clubs, etc.). Parents, please keep in mind that out-of-town commutes could become difficult during power shutdowns. Please make sure you authorize local neighbors and friends to pick up your student from school. You can update pickup information with your school office staff.

Beyond the Bell - Monta Loma Open Enrollment 1st-5th grade
We are currently accepting registration for Beyond the Bell Monta Loma. Beyond the Bell is a high-quality, free after-school program provided by the Mountain View Whisman School District. We provide an inclusive, safe and caring
environment for children where they can receive homework support, play recreational games, and engage in enrichment activities.

Hours and days of operation: Open on school days, Monday-Friday, after class dismissal until 6pm.

Cost: yearly, one-time $105 non-refundable registration fee per student, per site, only. There are no other fees for the program. Financial assistance is available upon request.

Halloween
Monta Loma will have its annual costume parade on Thursday, October 31st at 8:35 on the blacktop. Classroom activities for Halloween vary by teacher and grade level. See your child’s teacher for details. Alternative activities are available for anyone not wishing to participate in the costume parade or classroom activities.
Please note these rules for costumes.

Students must be able to put on and take off their own costumes.

Keep it friendly-No weapons, violence, gore, or vulgar messaging.

Masks are allowed only if they don’t obstruct vision.
LOST AND FOUND ITEMS
Did your child loses a jacket, lunch box, or a sweatshirt? Please stop by the Lost and Found Cart next to the MUR. If the items are not picked up by November 1st after school, they will be donated to charity.
Food distribution program at Monta Loma Elementary
In partnership with Community Services Agency (CSA) of Mountain View and Second Harvest Food Bank, we will be distributing bags with food items, such as bread, canned goods, fresh produce, pasta, etc. If you want to supplement your meals with additional items, please come:

Friday, November 15th is Movie Night at Monta Loma!
MUR doors open at 5:30pm and food is for sale, Movie starts at 6pm.
Bring your pillows, blankets and sleeping bags and join us for a fun night at the movies. Movie type food is available for purchase.
The PTA is calling on the parents of the 4th and 5th graders to help us make it a successful event. We need volunteers for set-up and clean up as well as food sales. Please use the following link to sign up to help!

Mattress Sale Fundraiser Flyer
Crittenden Middle School music program is hosting a mattress sale fundraiser on Sunday, November 10th from 10 a.m.- 5 p.m. in the Crittenden M.U.R. The mattress company will be bringing a variety of quality name brand mattresses of all sizes to the M.U.R that day. There will be 30 different mattress displays to try out. The company can take your mattress order, provide mattress delivery and then haul away your old mattress. Some mattresses will be on sale for up to 50% off regular retail price. The goal is to raise $5,000 for the students attending the annual Music Department Los Angeles trip.

Shrek the Musical Jr. at Crittenden Middle School (ticket order form attached)
Nasty will be nice and Mountain View will be ogre-the-moon when Crittenden students present their production of Shrek The Musical JR. on November 14-16 at 7:00pm and at 2:00pm on November 17th.
This family-friendly musical comedy follows the adventures of Shrek, an ogre who sets off on a quest to save a princess from a dragon. However, it turns out that in order to ultimately succeed, Shrek must battle an even bigger obstacle: learning how to believe in himself and open his heart to others.

The MVLA Parent Education Speaker Series presents "The Vaping Crisis: What Is It Doing to Our Kids?" with Bonnie Halpern-Felsher on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2019 - 7:00 - 9:00pm | LAHS Eagle Theatre | 201 Almond Ave., Los Altos, CA
Dr. Bonnie Halpern-Felsher, Professor of Pediatrics at Stanford University, will discuss the harmful impacts vaping has on the minds and bodies of adolescents.
Dr. Halpern-Felsher will provide an overview of current tobacco/nicotine products, including vapes, Juuls and other pod-based systems, which are more commonly used among teens than combustible cigarettes. Drawing upon on-going research, Dr. Halpern-Felsher will address why adolescents are drawn to using these products, dispel common misperceptions held by both adults and teens, and share effective, evidence-based strategies that parents, caregivers, and teachers, can leverage to help prevent and reduce the use of these addictive products.
The talk will be followed by a panel of local administrators and a mental health professional.

School meetings coming up. Open Enrollment for new MVWSD students starts Jan. 13
For NEW students: Open Enrollment is from January 13-February 7 online (FAQ’s click here). You can register your child for the 2020-21 school year when online registration opens on January 13 here: www.mvwsd.org/register
For CURRENT students in transitional kindergarten-7th grade: Parents will be asked by email to confirm enrollment in January 13 - February 7.

If your child turns 5 years old between September 2 – December 2 of the current school year, he/she may qualify for transitional kindergarten. TK info night is December 5 at 5:00 PM at Theuerkauf Elementary.
