Core value of the month: Responsibility
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
Dear Monta Loma Families,
Each year, Monta Loma creates a School Plan for Student Achievement that guides the work for our school for the coming year. In the fall, elected parent representatives from the Monta Loma School Site Council and English Language Advisory Committee work with me and school staff members to create a draft that is reviewed and approved by the MVWSD Board of Trustees. This plan helps us prioritize programs and strategies that will best serve our students. It lays out each school’s plan for achieving its goals, and connects with the District's Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP), which lays out goals for the entire district.
To learn more about the overarching goals and efforts that will be included in this year’s Monta Loma School Plan for Student Achievement, please:
-
Join me for a Principal’s Coffee on September 27, at 8:45
-
Read more in our school newsletters as I highlight these plans
-
Attend School Site Council or ELAC Meetings
If you would like to get involved, please contact me or attend the next School Site Council (SSC) meeting.
In partnership,
Gloria Higgins

Hearing and vision screening
Each fall, MVWSD conducts hearing and vision screenings of all students in kindergarten, second-, fifth- and eighth-grade, as California State Law mandates. These screenings will take place at Monta Loma Elementary on Friday, October 4th.
Parents will be notified in writing if children fail a screening. Parents who do not want their child screened for either vision and/or hearing should send a letter to their child's school each school year indicating that their child is to be excluded, and vision and/or hearing results will need to be provided from their physician.
If you have any concerns about your child’s vision or hearing please contact your school nurse. Questions about the screenings should be directed to the Health Services office at 650-526-3500.

NEWS FROM THE DISTRICT OFFICE
Cafecito coming up
For Spanish-speaking parents of MVWSD students - Join Superintendent Dr. Ayindé Rudolph for casual conversation on Wednesday, Sept. 25 from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at Graham Middle School staff room. Bring your questions and comments. Interpretation will be available.
When students miss too much school— regardless of the reason – it can cause them to fall behind academically. Your child is less likely to succeed if he or she is chronically absent. Children chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade are much less likely to read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade. By 6th grade, chronic absence is a proven early warning sign for students at risk for dropping out of school. For more information, click here.

Elementary students are enjoying hands-on science, standards-based art and music instruction, 4th and 5th-grade environmental science field trips, and more. Middle schools receive funding for afterschool athletics, science materials, electives and an environmental science field trip for every 6th-grade student. MVEF cannot do this without your help!
