Core value of the month: Courage

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE

Dear Monta Loma Families,

Were you as inspired as I was by last Friday’s Walkathon? What a fantastic event all around. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for our day of fun, food, and families.

Our deep appreciation goes to all the volunteers who came together to make a truly wonderful experience for our students. Special thanks to the PTA and ELAC! Everything from set up to tear down was a demonstration of the collaboration and community that make Monta Loma an exceptional school.

We also sincerely thank all the donors who pledged for student walkers, bought raffle and food tickets, gave in-kind donations for food and prizes. Early reports show we met our fundraising goal for the event with a total around $28,000. Money is measurable, but the impact of your generosity is infinite as it provided memorable experiences for students with field trips, after school activities, assemblies, library books, classroom supplies, and community building events.

We simply can’t thank you enough!

Gloria

NEWS FROM THE DISTRICT OFFICE

Middle School electives selection coming soon

It is the time of year when our incoming middle school students (grades 5-7) choose their electives courses for next year. As we enter the second year of the new inclusive middle school schedule, our middle schools are currently working to refine quality offerings that we hope will pique students’ interests and that are a great complement to our core academics.

Look for an email to parents on April 26 with course descriptions and selection directions. All 5th-7th graders will select their course electives online May 1- 10, 2019 through their PowerSchool portal. Your student will be assigned to an individualized schedule of classes based on his/ her academic needs and interests. To check your access, log on to https://ps.mvwsd.org/public/. If you have difficulty signing in, please contact your school office.

 Let’s Talk: Testing

Each spring, California students participate in the statewide testing program, the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). For MVWSD students in grades 3-8, this testing will happen after spring break (Please check your school newsletter for the exact dates).

This time is an opportunity to measure the skills of all students against the same academic standards, and get important information about our students’ progress. Learn more in this eighth episode in the "Let's Talk" video series. There are also links to resources and practice tests on www.mvwsd.org.

Click here for the video. Spanish subtitles are available.

Don’t miss the chance to see the incredible art work created by MVWSD students at the upcoming open houses. The Community School of Music and Arts (CSMA) will be showcasing student art projects at every school. The District's portion of art instruction is funded entirely by MVEF thanks to donations from parents like you!  If you have not donated this year you can do so at mvef.org/donate.

Take a break from the kitchen and help fund art, music, science, and athletics in our schools. The Counter Restaurant, located at 2850 W. El Camino Real, will donate 15% of your bill to the Mountain View Educational Foundation, Monday April 8th- Thursday 11th. Just mention MVEF or show the attached flyer!

MVLA Speaker Series presents two screenings of LIKE - an IndieFlix Original Film on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 | 6:00pm and 7:30pm | LAHS Eagle Theater |201 Almond Ave., Los Altos, CA. (Flyer here)

LIKE explores the impact of social media on our lives. Technology is a tool. It’s here to stay and social platforms are a place to connect, share and care, but what’s really happening? Are we addicted? How do we stop? Where do we start? What do we need to know?

By understanding the effects of technology and social media on the brain, on our lives, and on our civilization, we can learn how to navigate it more safely together.  Released this past fall, LIKE is a follow-up to Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety, an IndieFlix film about teen anxiety.

Following each screening, CHAC therapists will be available to share resources and to answer individual and small group questions.

Register for this free event at https://mvla2018-19-like.eventbrite.com Spanish subtitles available. Please indicate on Eventbrite when registering.

Sponsored by Los Altos Educational Foundation (LAEF), MVLA High School Foundation, Mountain View Educational Foundation (MVEF), and Los Altos-Mountain View PTA Council.
