Core value of the month: Responsibility

Dear Monta Loma Families,

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Today is a day for love and appreciation, and Monta Loma has many reasons to celebrate.

I’m very grateful for the commitment and enthusiasm demonstrated by parent and guardian volunteers who serve our school. Parent engagement is a hallmark of good schools, and we are truly blessed to have your participation.

Three groups are especially important to Monta Loma success, PTA, School Site Council, and ELAC. The work of our PTA enriches our students’ experiences through field trips, after-school program support, and most importantly, through community building events like our recent Game Night. School Site Council guides our annual plan for student achievement, closing the achievement gap, and school culture among other goals. ELAC guides our work with students who are learning English and facilitates parent engagement.

Soon it will be time for PTA, School Site Council, and ELAC to elect new members and leaders.

I encourage any and all interested parents to consider taking roles with these three groups. Meetings are open to all. Check Spotlights for dates and times, and I hope to see you at a meeting soon.

In partnership,

The Monta Loma Student Council (representing each 4th and 5th grade classroom) has recently completed a research project on what it means to be an 'upstander'.  They searched for quotes from famous people that could inspire others to stand up for what is right. The quotes had to align with our Monta Loma Core Values.  These quotes are now posted on the bulletin board near the Office, so please take a moment to read them.  They are quite thought-provoking.  We hope you find something to inspire you to be an upstander!

Seen in our ML garden Here is a photo of the Mourning Cloak (Nymohalis antiopa) that I saw on the

Lilac Verbena (Verbena lilacina) in the garden this morning. You can see the wear and tear on its wings.

JustREAD  has been providing 1:1 tutoring to the students at Monta Loma.  More volunteers are needed. These positions require a minimum of one and a maximum of two hours per week during normal school hours for the duration of the school year.  Individuals who are caring, passionate about education, and who believe  all students can learn make ideal volunteers.

JustREAD's goal is simple: every student, with direct help from caring, trained community volunteers, will graduate high school with the skills and self-confidence needed to pursue their dreams and become productive members of their communities.

Now, more Mountain View families are eligible for MVWSD’s preschool program, due to recent changes at the state and county level. Through the Santa Clara Child Care Subsidy Pilot, the income eligibility ceiling for those applying for our free preschool program is now $71,065/year (a family of 4).  Additionally, children who have their third birthday on or before December 1st (as opposed to September 1st) can now enroll in preschool, though priority enrollment for 4 year olds has not changed.

To make it even easier, families no longer have to re-certify or re-apply to the preschool program and prove income eligibility requirements in their child's second year of preschool.  Their initial application will remain valid for 24 months, without worry that income changes could affect their child’s pre-schooling.

The highly-rated MVWSD Preschool is currently enrolling for a few remaining spaces for 2017-18 and accepting applications for the 2018-19 school year.  Enrollment for 2018-19 will begin in March. for applications and details.

Become a Living Classroom Docent!

Mountain View Whisman School District’s Living Classroom program inspires our students to value the natural world through garden-based education. We provide Kindergarten through 5th grade classrooms with hour-long lessons that correlate with current science, math, and social studies standards. Living Classroom uses a hands-on, inquiry approach to learning which ensures our lessons are effective AND fun!

This year we will teach over 500 lessons with the help of our volunteers. Becoming a docent is rewarding, enjoyable, and no prior teaching experience is required. Interested in sharing your love of nature and outdoor learning with students? We would love to have you on board! Want to learn more?
