MONTA LOMA VISION

All students at Monta Loma will persevere to be academically prepared, socially skilled, and empowered members of any community.

MONTA LOMA MISSION

Inspire, prepare, empower lifelong learners.

Monta Loma Elementary, home of the Leopards, is a vibrant and diverse learning community serving students in Transitional Kindergarten through 5th grade. With a total enrollment of just over 300 students, our school may be small in size, but it is rich in diversity and culture. More than 25 languages are spoken in our students’ homes, and our children represent over 25 different birth countries. In addition, Monta Loma is home to our district’s Extensive Service Needs (ESN) program where we serve students in TK-5 who have Autism (6% of our population). While not located in the immediate Monta Loma community, we also serve the military base, Moffett Field. The military families represent all divisions of the military and NASA.

Our student population reflects the world around us: 11% Asian, 3% Black/African American, 44% Hispanic/Latino, 26% White, 12% Multi-racial, and 15% from military families. In addition, 21% of our students are English learners, 11% receive Special Education services, and 34% are socio-economically disadvantaged. This diversity of backgrounds and experiences provides students with daily opportunities to learn from one another, develop cultural awareness, and appreciate both similarities and differences.

At Monta Loma, we are dedicated to providing a safe, supportive, respectful, and engaging environment where every child can thrive. Visitors to our campus will notice positive relationships between students and staff, a strong focus on academic achievement, and intentional support for social-emotional well-being. Teachers challenge students to think critically, solve problems, collaborate with peers, and communicate effectively. Through ongoing professional development and collaboration, our teachers continually refine their practice to ensure engaging, differentiated instruction that meets the needs of all learners.

Our school climate is grounded in our core values of Respect, Responsibility, Courage, Compassion, and Hard Work. These values guide behavior and decision-making in every classroom and across the campus. Students are celebrated throughout the year for modeling our values, including through weekly Leopard Spot Winners and monthly Leopard Leader Awards. Monta Loma classrooms are built upon the Responsive Classroom approach, ensuring a foundation of caring relationships, student voice, and high expectations.

Families are essential partners in our work. We warmly welcome parent and guardian involvement through community-building events, Parent University workshops, Principal’s Coffee, and leadership opportunities such as PTA, ELAC, and School Site Council. We encourage all families to participate in at least five school events each year, whether through volunteering, attending meetings, or supporting classroom activities. Beyond family partnerships, our community partners provide valuable enrichment through after-school programs, field trips, and extended learning opportunities.

As part of the Mountain View Whisman School District (MVWSD), Monta Loma benefits from a strong culture of collaboration and commitment to student success. Our staff, families, and community work hand-in-hand to create a school where every child feels safe, supported, and challenged to reach their full potential—academically, socially, and emotionally.
